The Federal House Review

No, this post is not about anything political. That would be waaaaaaayyyyyyyy too controversial on this blog. The Federal House is the name of a restaurant on Market Space in downtown Annapolis that has earned my first restaurant review. Your first glance at the menu may tell you that the Federal House is the perfect place for traditional American food but when it comes to vegan options, they are certainly not mediocre. And yes, I did tell our server that the restaurant (and the item I ordered) would be getting a very good review on here.

Many restaurants have veggie burgers as a vegan or vegetarian option. You may have heard of brands like Gardein and Beyond Meat that seek to make vegan versions of the meats we grow up loving. The Federal House takes that concept to make what they call their "Impossible Burger", which many restaurants do not do. They describe it as a plant based protein burger that tastes like beef. The only thing that comes with it that's not vegan is Swiss cheese but I asked that tomato be substituted instead, and they graciously did so. The meal also comes with plenty of greens for the health conscious vegans who can't go very long without their greens.

As for my thoughts about the restaurant beyond the food, I am pleased to say that the Federal House offers very friendly service. This is not a fast food place but you won't be waiting an hour to be seated and get your food. One thing that sets the Federal House apart is that (at least when I was there) it was not crowded and loud. Restaurants that are not crowded and loud are very hard to find. I enjoyed actually being able to hear the music!

In conclusion, if you are on the hunt for stellar vegan dining in a city with no vegan restaurants (and in the state of the crabs), look no further than the Federal House. You will thank me later.

Cinco de Mayo as a vegan

Happy Cinco de Mayo! When you think of the anniversary of the Mexicans winning the Battle of Puebla, what comes to mind? For me, it's food, food, and did I mention food? You will meet few people who love Mexican food more than I do. One of my favorite things about Mexican cuisine is how easy it is to make it vegan and on Cinco de Mayo, I don't need an excuse to load up on it. I made taco bowls for lunch today from cooked quinoa, lettuce, tomato, red bell pepper, salsa, and a chopped black bean burger patty. The salsa I used is the Tostitos original one. I grew up loving Tostitos products and I'm super happy that I don't have to give them up to live this lifestyle. My go to black bean burger patties are from the brand "Gardein", which makes plant based imitation meats 100% vegan and all of them that I have tried look and taste like the real thing and are quick and easy to prepare and I absolutely love them. Trader Joe's Frozen Açai Review

If there's one thing I look forward to in the morning (let's face it, I'm not a morning person) it's a smoothie. I love smoothies. Açai is a new favorite. After having several açai smoothies using the powder from Wegman's, I was ready to try the frozen form and see which one I like better. I'm not sure if it's because they're frozen but the frozen form takes forever to blend so I had the blender going long after the rest of the smoothie was of a uniform consistency. So it's not for the impatient but good things come to those who wait so this is a good patience exercise. In terms of the final product, I loved it. I like that the flavor is much more pronounced with the frozen form than with the powder form. Trader Joe's never disappoints! So please do yourself a favor and give frozen açai a fair chance. You will thank me later!
